A friendly little thing, he approached me as I was passing, doubtless hoping for a piece of bread. Sadly, I was unable to oblige. Though normally much more brightly coloured, male ducks are drab at this time of year as they moult (they can't fly as well so are more vulnerable and they don't need to be bright to attract a mate). This stage is called an 'eclipse' plumage. Drake Mallards can still be told by their yellow bills and brighter breast.
