taken 17 years ago, 4 km WNW of Cranwell, Lincolnshire, England

Hoary Plantain (Plantago media)
Hoary Plantain (Plantago media)
This plant grows in meadows and grassland. It belongs to the large plantain group. The "ruff" of white anthers around the flower spike makes it unmistakable. The leaves are edible and can be used in salads if picked young. The plant has many medicinal uses including relieving toothache, to make an eyewash and as a laxative.
The deep pink flower in the background is red clover (Trifolium pratense).
