Rails heading into the sunset
Rails heading into the sunset
Looking west from Curzon Bridge (just outside the square at SU920563) along the London to Bournemouth railway. There are very few curves on the line for the whole distance from the outskirts of London suburbs to beyond Basingstoke but this is one of them. Opened in 1838 this stretch of line closely parallels the Basingstoke Canal (it can be seen behind the retaining wall on the right), and virtually put it out of business. Whereas the canal blended into the countryside, the railway sliced its way across the landscape through deep cuttings and across massive embankments. (Photographer's note: I waited ages to catch a train coming round the curve but none came until, of course, I turned away and was fifty yards off!)
