The Western entrance to York Minster includes the two bell towers. The NW Tower holds the clock bells, i.e. Great Peter, 10.8 tons, and six smaller bells the largest being 3 tons. The SW Tower holds a total of 35 bells of which 22 can be 'played' by a carillon. For a view of the Minster from the city wall refer to picture SE6052 : York Minster from the city wall.
When SE6052 : York. located at SE603520 is moved to this square, the story is that "Mad Alice" was hanged here in 1825, apparently only guilty of being 'mad'. The ghost of Alice reputedly drifts along the lane which once was named after her and features in the city's ghost tour industry.
