To the Glory of God and in honoured memory of those in this parish who died in the service of their country in the Great War.

BURDEN Herbert.(CWGC have BURDON) Private 202864, 2/6th Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment died of wounds 24th November 1917 aged 31 Herbert Born 1888 at Huby, near Easingwold to Francis and Mary. In 1911 he was living with his parents at the Brickyard Farm, Huby, Yorkshire, occupation, working for his father on the farm later his parents were living at George Street, Wistow, Selby, Yorkshire. His brother Thomas also fell. At rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, France. Family surname, BURDEN.

BURDEN Thomas. Private S/18145, 9th Service Battalion, Black Watch, Royal Highlanders, died of wounds 9th April 1917 aged 32. Born 1885 at Huby, near Easingwold to Francis and Mary. In 1911 he was living with his parents at the Brickyard Farm, Huby, Yorkshire, occupation, working gardener. He was the husband of Isabella Burden, of 27, Whitefriars Street, Perth, Scotland. His brother Herbert also fell . At rest in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.

CASTELL Austin Sydney. Gunner 129179, X/4th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery died 5th December 1917 aged 21. Son of Alfred and Mary Ann Castell, of Sutton-on-the-Forest, Yorkshire. At rest in Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France

CUNDALL James Arthur. Private 19728, 12th West Yorkshire Regiment died 14th July 1916 aged 19. Son of Thomas William and Annie Cundall, of Alcan Farm, Huby, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

EASTWOOD George. Private 7257, 1/9th Durham Light Infantry died 5th November 1916 aged 19. Son of Isaac Eastwood, of Grange Cottage, Sutton-on-the-Forest, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

HARDMAN Thomas W It may be this person. Private 195095 Thomas William Hardman, 1st Canadian Infantry died 8th April 1917. At rest in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
There is also this person. 2nd Lieutenant Tom Walker HARDMAN of the 11th King's Liverpool Regiment died 18th July 1917 age 26. Son of Arthur and Sarah H. Hardman, of Milner Avenue, Bury, native of Lancashire. At rest in Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery, Belgium.

HEBDON William Henry. Lance Corporal 34503, 7th King's Owen Yorkshire Light Infantry died 23rd September 1917 aged 25. Son of Jonathan and Anna E. Hebdon, of Huby, Sutton-on-the-Forest, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

HAYDEN George. Private 36079, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 13th October 1916. Born at Haxby, Yorkshire, enlisted at Easingwold, Yorkshire into the 2nd Yorkshire Hussars. He was the son of Jacob who was granted a war gratuity on the 26th April 1917 revised on the 25th November 1919, his mother was called Elizabeth. In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at Sutton on the Forest, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

SCOTT Joseph. Private 25466, 1st Grenadier Guards killed in action at Havre 27th September 1918 aged 26. Born in 1892 at Sutton on the Forest, Yorkshire enlisted at York son of William George who was granted a war gratuity on the 12th February 1919, revised on the 25th November 1919, his mother was called Harriet. In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at Sutton on the Forest, Yorkshire, occupation, gardener aged 19 .

WOODLIFFE Arthur. Private 45591, 8th Yorkshire Regiment died 12th July 1918 aged 19. Son of William and Isabella Woodliffe, of Sutton-on-Forest, Easingwold, Yorkshire. At rest in Cavalletto British Cemetery, Italy.

ALLEN William Leslie. Second Officer, Merchant Navy on S.S. Fort Lamy (Newport) died 8th March 1943 aged 34. Son of William Dixon Allen and Emily Allen, husband of Marjorie Ellen Allen, of Sutton-on-the-Forest, Yorkshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) William Leslie ALLEN of Lonsboro House, Sutton on Forest, Yorkshire died on or since 8th March 1943 at sea. His effects went Ellen Allen, his widow. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

EAGLE John. Private 4386895, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment died 18th July 1942 aged 30. At rest in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.

PETTY Alfred Herbert. Pilot Office, Air Gunner 156355, 10 Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR) died 3rd November 1943 aged 22. Son of Herbert John Thomas Petty and Emily Petty, of Stillington, Yorkshire. At rest in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

SPRUCE Francis ( Frank) Stephen. Lance Bombardier 1070169, 4th Medium Battery, Royal Artillery died 17th December 1943 aged 38. Son of Robert and Christina N. Spruce, of Huby, Yorkshire. At rest in Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy
