Church of St Peter, Newdigate
Church of St Peter, Newdigate
Found opposite the Six Bells pub at the junction of Rusper Road and Church Lane this has been a place of worship for the best part of a thousand years LinkExternal link. The oldest parts of the church date from the 12th or 13th-century (depending on which history you read) with subsequent major additions in the 14th, 16th and 19th-centuries. The wooden west tower is acclaimed as one of the finest oak structures in England LinkExternal link and houses 6 bells cast in 1803 by Thomas Mears of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry LinkExternal link. These fine bells found the perfect home as the Newdigate ringers soon became champions LinkExternal link.

At the end of an evening of ringing the changes on Thomas Mears' six bells the ringers would be able to cross the road to enjoy a drink, a smoke and a song in the other Six Bells! Sometimes it's easy to work out how a pub got its name.
