Calvert Landfill Site 3
Calvert Landfill Site 3
This view looking west from close by the bridleway between Calvert and Greatmoor is of part of Calvert Landfill Site, see SP6923 : Calvert Landfill Site. Tipping has almost finished in this area of the site as it will soon be full. In the middle distance high density plastic sheeting is being laid to cover the landfill. This is then capped with clay and given a domed shape to help with drainage. The sheeting and capping is to prevent rainfall getting into the waste, and so reducing the amount of leachate ie. contaminated water that leaks from a landfill site or dump. Finally holes are drilled at intervals down into the waste to collect methane gas, which is used to make electricity, and to collect leachate, which has to be cleaned before it can be released onto the land.
