The Chalybeate Spring, Tunbridge Wells
Situated in The Pantiles, the spring was discovered by Dudley Lord North and taking the waters became fashionable. By 1619 "the wells" had become a popular meeting place for royalty and the aristocracy. The village grew up around the spring and the Bath House was built over the spring in about 1804. In 1847 the columns and portico were added but the baths fell into disuse and by 1857 the eastern wing had been removed. The Bath House façade was restored in 1987 and the waters are still dispensed by the "dipper" in the summer months.
