Old sheep dip and fold
Old sheep dip and fold
Immediately below the bridge, Afon Las is partially dammed by a brick wall. In the past, at dipping time, the remaining gap would blocked off allowing the level of the water to rise to form a pool behind the dam. Organophosphate chemicals would then be added to the water. The fold on the opposite bank was used to confine the sheep while waiting to be dipped. Two men would stand at the fold's river opening and grab each sheep in turn and throw it, feet first, into the dip. The sheep had to be in the dip for a matter some two minutes. The local bobby would usually be in attendence to see that the process was carried out correctlly.
