The Island is actually a headland and not a true island. It is home to a coastguard lookout and St Nicholas Chapel. St Ives Bay is seen beyond with the Trinity House buoy tender Patricia. Patricia was built in 1982 as a multifunctional tender and is equipped for undertaking aid to navigation maintenance work, towing, wreck location and marking amongst other projects.
It is 86.3 m long with a service speed of 12 knots. Propulsion is diesel electric with four main engines that are 750 kW Ruston type 6RKcZ driving two propulsion motors of 1120 kW at 250 rpm. It was built in Leith by Robb Caledon.
