TQ1942 : The Six Bells public house

The Six Bells public house
The Six Bells public house
Originally two 17th-century cottages the pub (probably) originated in one and expanded into the other. Literally over the road from TQ1942 : Church of St Peter, Newdigate the pub was formerly known as the Five Bells but was renamed after the re-casting of the church bells, in 1803, increasing their number to six.

The timbered-framed construction is typical of the area and period but the black and white paint scheme is not: photographs from 1924 show the ground floor unpainted with the timbers exposed but, by the 1950s, the ground floor was all white; picking out the timbers in black has happened since.
