A nearby feature of interest was marked on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1858): an individual tree that was named the Kissing Tree. It does not appear on the second-edition map (revised in 1895) or on any later maps.
"Kissing Tree: A hawthorn tree the trunk of which is thickly studded with nails. South side of the Fereneze Hills. Name well known" [OS Name Books].
It stood on the other side of the fence, right of centre, about 50 metres from the spot from which this picture was taken.
In the background is Balgray Reservoir (
NS5157). Directly behind it is Tinto Hill (
NS9534), at a distance of 53 km (33 miles).
