ST8806 : Careless chandler and ingenious Bastards

taken 15 years ago, near to Blandford st Mary, Dorset, Great Britain

Careless chandler and ingenious Bastards
Careless chandler and ingenious Bastards
This paving slab reads: "Recipe for regeneration: take one careless tallow chandler and two ingenious Bastards."

The reference here is to the fire of 1731, which destroyed three quarters of the town, and brothers John and William Bastard, who designed and in many cases built much of what was rebuilt, including Blandford's most prominent buildings.
