St Martin's Church, Wharram Percy
St Martin's church is one of the most thoroughly studied parish churches in England. From small beginnings, the church was completely rebuilt in the 12th century, enlarged through the 13th and 14th centuries and reduced in the 15th or 16th century, when the village was deserted. Afterwards it was used by the inhabitants of nearly townships. Its size reflects shifting religious practices as well as rises and falls in population. This is a typical English parish church. Thousands of other churches, if they were to be studied as closely, could tell a similar story.
