SU1800 : Eastern corner of Bisterne Common, New Forest

taken 10 years ago, near to Thorney Hill, Hampshire, Great Britain

Eastern corner of Bisterne Common, New Forest
The substantial fence-post towards the left of the photo marks the eastern-most corner of Bisterne Common. The boundary marker stone is partly hidden in the undergrowth in the foreground. I think the fence is set further back to avoid Lugden Barrow, a bronze-age burial mound later used as a boundary marker on the perambulation of the Crown lands of the New Forest. The pines of the Dur Hill Inclosure are in the distance.
