Forest clearing with the ruins of a copper mine
These are the ruins of the Dolfrwynog Turf Copper Mine. The copper was abundant in the peat of the bog which existed here. In the 19thC the peat was cut and sent to Swansea for the extraction of the copper. The area is now a SSSI on account of the copper tolerant vegetation which grows here, including such things as Sea Campion. Conifer trees cannot tolerate the high copper content and those that were planted here have died.
