Cark Hall Allotment
'Allotment' is a common name for an area of grazing in the Lake District. Before the dissolution of the monasteries most arable land was farmed in strips in the valley bottom, enclosed and separated from the fell land by a wall known as a ‘ring garth’. Following the dissolution of the monasteries (1536) the gradual acquisition of land by individual yeoman farmer families, known as 'the statesmen', began to change the characteristic of the Lakeland landscape. Traditionally there had been no exclusive rights for individual farmers to particular parts of the land beyond the ring garths and for decades farmers stuck to the same areas. Their sheep and cattle were grazing 'allotments' or ‘heafs’. The ability of the Herdwick sheep to instinctively stay within the bounds of their ‘home patches’ is known regionally as 'heafing'.

The landscape in this 'allotment' shows the typical shale outcrops and rocky ridges with basins of improved grassland found in this area in the Lakeland Peninsulas. Adjoining Barnsley Allotment (in SD3682) Cark Hall Allotment exhibits grassland, heath, mire and juniper scrub together with a diverse and rich ground flora. The woodland in the background is Seatle Plantation and the fells on the horizon are beyond High Newton to the southeast of Windermere.
