Barbican of Lewes Castle
Barbican of Lewes Castle
The Barbican at Lewes Castle dates from the C15th and is therefore one of the "newer" parts of the castle complex. To its left can be seen the only remaining wall of the originally square Norman gatehouse, some 400 years older than it.
The photo was taken from the zig-zag steps seen in TQ4110 : Lewes Castle from the Barbican
The entire castle site is a listed Ancient Monument LinkExternal link
Lewes Castle

Lewes Castle was built in 1069 by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, the brother-in-law of William the Conqueror.

The first fortification on the site was a wooden keep, later converted to stone. It is unusual for a motte and bailey construction in that it has two mottes. LinkExternal link
