NS3977 : Slime mould plasmodium beginning to knot
taken 8 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland
Slime mould plasmodium beginning to knot
The slime visible left of centre is a good guide to how this whole specimen would have looked just a day or two earlier: that goo is undifferentiated plasmodium; the plasmodium is the slimy, slow-moving feeding stage of the slime mould.
On the right, the plasmodium is starting to knot and clump; this is the beginning of the formation of spore-producing structures. The species cannot be identified at this stage of development (a different species is shown at a similar stage in
NS3581 : Slime mould plasmodium).
This specimen was among coniferous leaf litter in the dense shade of trees to the north of a
NS3977 : Path through the woods.
