Looking towards the station from Mills Mount.

The tower monument, at the rear, is the Nelson Monument on Carlton Hill. The design chosen for the Nelson Monument, an upturned telescope, was by Robert Burns. It was erected in 1816.

To the rear of the Nelson Monument is the National Monument, also on Calton Hill, which was started as a memorial to the Scots who died in the Napoleonic Wars, but was never finished due to lack of funding. Many who had promised donations failed to pay.
