This view is of the downland to the north-east of Stockton Wood from the tree-enclosed permissive byway that runs inside the eastern edge of the wood for just 100m in the grid square, see ST9736 : Restricted byway, Stockton Wood, near Stockton. Beyond the downland is the valley of the River Wylye. The downland here and just to the north of the woods, as well as in the woods themselves is the site of ancient settlement covering 60 acres, see ST9736 : Iron Age settlement near Stockton Wood, Stockton.
