Viscount Palmerston was born in 1784. He became a popular Foreign Secretary and later in 1855 Prime Minister. He was a burgess of Southampton and on his death in 1865 a memorial committee was set up to collect money from the public.

This statue of him, which stands seven feet high on its plinth and is made of white marble and granite, was unveiled in 1869 in what was then called Fair Field, now known as Palmerston Park.
