SE2833 : Sutton Street subway, north end

taken 8 years ago, near to Leeds, England

Sutton Street subway, north end
Sutton Street subway, north end
The subway originally ran from Sutton Street on the south side of the railway lines out of Leeds, to Talavera Street on the north side, underneath Holbeck High Level station which closed in 1962. It has since been shortened at this end, as the station buildings and platforms above it were removed. For a wider view of this end of the subway, see SE2833 : Subway under the railway from Armley Gyratory - the vegetation on the embankment has grown considerably since 2007. It now forms part of a pedestrian and cycle route between Whitehall Road and New Wortley, avoiding the busy Armley Gyratory interchange.

The electrical conduit seen in the photo serves the lighting that, curiously, is only provided in the middle third of the tunnel.

Update: by 2019 this tunnel had been closed to public access due to construction activity at the south (far) end, and it seemed uncertain whether it would open again on completion of the works.
