The
Cat and Fiddle Inn is well known as the second-highest pub in England, though I heard somewhere that the landlord has recently had the height resurveyed and is now claiming first place, higher than the Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire (
NY896066). Even if not, it's a close second - the generally accepted difference is only some 40 feet. The most popular theory is that that the pub name comes from the French "le chat fidele", the faithful cat. It's a popular stop for bikers exercising their skills on the A537 Macclesfield-Buxton road, which has been described as the most dangerous in England. A noticeboard by the pub entrance contains a map showing the locations of 25 serious and 3 fatal motorcycle accidents along the Cat and Fiddle Road in the last 4 years.
