The names on the memorial and the village war memorial are the same.


1914-1918

ALLEN George Samuel. Pte 136973, 8th Machine Gun Corps, formerly 100386, West Riding Regiment, died whilst a prisoner of war in a hospital Camp II, Munsteron the 11 Sept 1918, age 19. Son of John and Fanny of Owls Clough, Oakamoor. Buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany

AMOS John William. Lance Corporal 96003 , 10th Platoon, C Company, 10th Sherwood Foresters, formerly 76741, Derbyshire Yeomanry, killed in action, 28 March 1918 as stated on the memorial in Holy Trinity Church. killed in action 22 March 1918 age 22. Son of Arthur James and Isabella of Consall near Cheadle Staffs. He attested on the 31st December 1915 aged 19 and 1 month and posted into the army reserve, occupation, bricklayers labourer. His next of kin was his sister Dorothy Winifred Amos. On the 6th May 1917 he was mobilized to join the Derbyshire Yeomanry. He was posted to France on the 13th September 1917 and the same day transferred to the Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on the 22nd March 1918. Native of Checkley, Staffordshire. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France

BIRKS, Reginald . Pioneer GR/210654, Royal Engineers died in hospital 14 Feb 1919 age 20. He was the son of Peter and Emily formerly of 7, Stewart Street, Fenton, Stoke on Trent, and then the Gate House, Oakamoor, Staffordshire. Buried in Oakamoor Chapelyard Staffordshire.

BOLTON, Gilbert Benson. Lieutenant, 8th North Staffordshire Regiment died at Grandcourt, 18 Nov 1916. Son of Thomas and Nina, nee Rathbone of Oakamoor Lodge. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Oakamoor Lodge, Oakamoor, Staffordshire.
Buried in Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval, France.

BRETT, Joseph William. Pte, 13747 Grenadier Guards died in hospital, 28 Nov 1918 aged 32 at 1st General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, Son of John and Elizabeth of Oakamoor, husband of Eliza A, nee Moore who was granted a war gratuity on the 8th July 1919. In 1911 he was in the army serving with the 2nd Grenadier Guards at Blenheim Barracks, Duke of Connaught Road, Hampshire. Buried in Uplands Cemetery, Smethwick

CARTLIDGE, Harold. Private 39121 4th North Staffordshire Regiment killed in action at Ypres, Belgium 2 Dec 1917 aged 20 Native of Cheadle, Staffordshire and enlisted at Oakamoor. Son of Herbert and Anne Cartledge, of 3, The Island, Oakamoor. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (CWGC have CartlEdge)

FEARNS Thomas. Pte 23455, 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers killed in action 16 May 1915. Son of John of Moneystone, Oakamoor. In 1901 he was with his father at his mother, Milicent, home in Moneystone, Oakamoor. His father was also called John.

GREEVES, Arthur Frederick Wellesley. 2nd Lieutenant, 8th North Staffordshire Regiment died of wounds at No 133 Field Ambulance, Ypres, Belgium 20 Sept 1917, age 26 Son of Rev Arthur Wellesley and Eliza Marie Ellis Greeves of Oakamoor Vicarage. Buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium.

GREEVES, John Wellesley. 2nd Lieutenant, 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment killed in action at Lens, 1st July 1917. Son of Rev Arthur Wellesley and Eliza Marie Ellis Greeves of Oakamoor Vicarage Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France

McKNIGHT, Edward David. Lance Corporal 51197, 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment killed in action at Cambrai, France 29 Sept 1918. Born at Oakamoor in 1899 to William Edward Mary Jane McKnight. In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents at Moor Court, Oakamoor. His mother was granted a war gratuity on the 30th Aril 1919. Buried in Gauzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.

PRINCE Bernard Thomas. Pte 88668, 13th, Royal Fusiliers killed in action at Bullecourt 23 August 1918. Born at Whiston, near Oakamoor in 1896 to Arthur and Elizabeth of The Lord Nelson, Oakamoor. In 1911 he was still living with his parents in the Lord Nelson. His father was the Innkeeper. (His grandfather was the Innkeeper of the Bulls Head, Cheadle near Oakamoor. Both pubs are still serving ale and food) His mother was granted a war gratuity on the 2nd January 1919, revised on the 16th December 1919. Buried in Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France

SALT, Bertram Thomas. Pte 23888, 6 Platoon, B. Company, 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers killed in action at Loos, France 22 June 1916 age 20. Son of William and Hannah Janet Lorne Neath, Tean Road, Cheadle, Staffs. In 1911 he was living with his parents at Hawksmoor Cottage, Oakamoor. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
His joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on the 7th May 1915 aged 19. He was living with his parents at Hawksmoor Cottage, Oakamoor. He was employed by Bolton's Brass and Copper Works, Oakamoor making copper washer. After he had completed his training he embarked from France of S.S. Princess Victor on the 11th October 1915 from Southampton, disembarked the following day at Rouen and marched into Infantry Base Depot, Rouen to await dispersal to his regiment. On the 15th October 1915 he was sent to join the 2nd Battalion. He was report missing presumed killed on the 22nd June 1916. His mother received a letter from George Moon of the same battalion who saw Bert killed on the 22nd June. George, himself, was also killed in action, on the 16th August 1916, his body never found. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

ALLEN, Wilfred John. Gunner 1597300, 190th Battery, 10th, H.A.A. Regt Royal Artillery attached to 6th The Royal Warwickshire Regt, killed in action, 2 April 1942, age 29. Son of David Wilfred and Hannah of Cotton, Staffs, husband of Mary Elizabeth of Cotton, Buried in Pembroke Military Cemetery, Malta.

BOLTON, David Malcolm. Pilot Officer, 61483, 53rd Sqdn, Royal Air Force killed on active service 29 June 1945 age 20. Son of David Colfox and Katherine of Oakamoor. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

COOPER, Ronald Edward. Private 14010510 Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, killed on active service on 29th June 1945 aged 22. Son of Edward and Nora Cooper, of Doveridge, Derbyshire Buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Oakamoor

PLANT, Edwin. Marine PO/X1788 Royal Marines killed on board H.M.S. Hood 24 May 1941 age 25. Son of John Edwin and Gertrude of Oakamoor. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire

WALKER, Wilfred. Pilot Officer 76457, 44th Sqdn, Royal Air Force, killed in action 19 July 1940 age 31. He was the son of Samuel, Copper Refiner working for Thomas Bolton and Sons, Brass and Copper Manufacturer of Oakamoor, and Florence Walker of Stoney Dale, Oakamoor Buried in Oakamoor Chapelyard
