The road runs down Birk Dale linking the township of Nateby in Edendale and the village of Keld in Upper Swaledale. On the right is Uldale Beck which becomes Birkdale Beck further down the valley. On the left is Coldbergh Scar. The Green (December-April) route of the Coast to Coast Walk follows the road here to alleviate the effects of erosion on the original route.
