The Grade I-listed schoolroom (i.e. hall) dated 1497, where Isaac Newton attended the Free Grammar School between 1655-60. It is still owned and used by The King's School. Between the ages of 13-18yrs Newton boarded with a Mr William and Mrs Catherine Clarke, a married couple and their 7 children, friends of his mother and stepfather. Mr Clarke kept an apothecary shop in High Street, near to the now-demolished George Hotel. A length of southern boundary wall of the graveyard of St Wulfrum's Church is visible on the left. This street connects Swaingate (ahead) and Castlegate.
