NR9149 : Granite erratic boulder

taken 8 years ago, near to Catacol, Isle of Arran, North Ayrshire, Scotland

Granite erratic boulder
Granite erratic boulder
A superb erratic boulder dumped upon tilted Dalradian schist outcrop at the top of the modern beach. The composition of the boulder is very clearly granite from the North Arran Granite Pluton, and the location suggests dispersal of ice along Gleann Easan Biorach to Loch Ranza followed by deflection south-westwards in an ice-stream moving out of Loch Fyne along the western coast of Arran. Similar boulders can be seen in Loch Ranza (NR9351 : Erratic boulders).
