Giant Beetle
Giant Beetle
I haven't a clue what type of beetle it was, but it was larger than the 2 seen here next to it! For all you beetle fans out there, this one had a dark blue band around its periphery! Anybody know what it is and would like to add a comment to this entry?

Thanks to Brian Marshall who has identified the beetle - it's a Violet Ground Beetle (Carabus violaceus). One of our largest beetles. It is black with a metallic violet sheen - hence the name. Its wing casings are fused together, and they have a flattened flange all the way around the edges.
