At this point the Derby - Stoke line (the lines to the left of the picture) leaves the main line from Derby to Birmingham. The junction's former name was North Staff Junction, derived from the fact that the Stoke line was originally owned by the Stoke-based North Staffordshire Railway.
The train is part of the Virgin Trains Cross Country service between the North-East and South-West
