Nelson's Monument on Ports Down
Nelson's Monument on Ports Down
The sea-facing inscription reads "Consecrated to the memory of Lord Viscount Nelson by the zealous attachment of all those who fought at Trafalgar to perpetuate his triumph and their regret". The architect, John Groves, took inspiration from the great obelisks at Axum which were discovered by the British Ethiopian Expedition (1805-7). The road on the right is called Monument Lane.
(This view is similar to SU6107 : Nelson's monument atop Portsdown Hill but shows the monument without keystoning)
