TR3256 : Beside the Sandwich bypass

Beside the Sandwich bypass
Beside the Sandwich bypass
A public right of way follows the eastern boundary of the Sandwich bypass north from Biller's Bush to the Sandwich Road bridge on the road to Woodnesborough. Ahead it is classified as public bridleway ES8A, behind the photographer it is public footpath ES511A. The bridleway here turns west (right, in the foreground) for a few metres, to link with public footpath EE226 (also from Biller's Bush), before continuing east as public footpath EE226. ES8A alongside the bypass was dedicated as a bridleway by the council; the short stretch of ES8A to the west appears to be a relic of public bridleway ES8 from Black Lane in Sandwich, which was severed by the bypass (and which was originally classified as a Road Used as Public Path). It is still possible to cross the bypass on foot to make a connection between the severed halves, but it is not an attractive proposition on horseback.
Public footpath EE226 Foxborough Hill to Sandwich bypass :: TR3156
A public footpath which runs generally north-east from Foxborough Farm on Foxborough Hill, just south of Woodnesborough, to terminate on the Sandwich bypass, at a junction with bridleway ES8A and ES511A. The path follows long-established field boundaries or drains, and intersects with public footpath EE225 to Church Street, Woodnesborough. It was formerly part of a longer, direct path to Sandwich, which still exists beyond the bypass as public bridleway ES8. A further public footpath crossed from the Old Rope Works on the Sandwich Road to Felderland Farm, but this was extinguished in 1951. The East Kent Light Railway LinkExternal link crossed the path near the bypass (the electricity transmission line follows a similar alignment), but there is now virtually no trace of it save for a simple bridge over the adjacent ditch.
