Engineers' Train at Aberystwyth
Engineers' Train at Aberystwyth, taken 10 years ago
A Network Rail engineers train waits for the road at Aberystwyth. The reason for the visit is unknown but is probably in connection with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a standardised rail signalling system for the whole of Europe. In the UK, the first implementation will be on the Cambrian Line between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth and on the 'branch' to Pwllheli. Full operation is scheduled for 2008.

In the foreground is the narrow gauge track of the Vale of Rheidol Railway. At this stage I understand that there are no plans to include the VOR in the ERTMS scheme!
