TQ7885 : Tidal barrier

Canvey Island, Essex, Great Britain

Tidal barrier
Tidal barrier
The extensive work to prevent flooding along the Thames estuary and at Canvey and Benfleet in particular was a major engineering achievement. This is Benfleet Barrier, built across the Benfleet Creek. The drop-down gates are used when an unusually high tide is predicted and surge conditions are forecast.
