St. John's Town of Dalry from Waterside Hill.
St. John's Town of Dalry from Waterside Hill.
The summit of Waterside Hill, just off the Southern Upland Way is famous for its association with Robert Burn's poem, Tam O'Shanter, modelled on a local worthy Adam Forester, who was pursued by witches to the summit of the hill. He there drew a circle around himself and his horse with his sword, to protect himself from the advancing witches who only managed to get his horses tail as it protruded beyond the circle. Forester was saved by advancing daylight!
