It has been suggested (Sacred Stones, by Terry John, Gomer 1994) that this standing stone was once incorporated in a ty-unnos/one-night house of which the ruins lie roundabout. No source is given for this information but this being common land, it was once a practice for the homeless to create property rights by throwing up a makeshift dwelling overnight and, if smoke issued from the chimney by sunrise, the householder would be entitled to remain. They would tend to be very basic structures of wood and mud but could be strengthened at a later date. It's easy to see how the stone could act as a useful support.
