The viaduct was built in 1903 for the Loch Swilly Railway linking Letterkenny and Burtonport. This was the scene of a serious accident on 31st January 1925 when a carriage was derailed by a storm, hitting the parapet and sending four passengers to their deaths. The line closed in 1941.
