Penistone - St John's Gardens
Entering St Johnís Gardens from Shrewsbury Road you pass through a metal arch which incorporates this abacus. The beads are made of metal and can be easily passed to and fro. Why is this abacus here?

Nicholas Saunderson was a mathematician who lost his sight when an infant. He devised an abacus which he could use by his sense of touch. You can read up the story of Nicholas Saunderson, who was born in Penistone (Thurlstone) at LinkExternal link.
