TR0518 : Across the Dungeness shingle
taken 8 years ago, 3 km from Lydd (london-Ashford) Airport, Kent, England
Across the Dungeness shingle
View roughly north-east from the RSPB access road. Such soil as there is is pretty thin - in the past I have found English stonecrop (Sedum anglicum) growing on what appeared to be little more than well-weathered rabbit droppings.
I've managed to include a tree (a hawthorn?) in this picture, but the flatness of the terrain offers no shelter from the wind off the Channel - and that along with the lack of soil means trees are scarce. At times it feels as if you're on a shingle bar in mid-Channel.
