The roofless ruins of Muriau'r Gwyddel
Muriau'r Gwyddel means "Irishman's walls". In North and West Wales, dwellings and enclosures of the immediate post Roman period are often ascribed to the Irish. This was a period when there were extensive incursions by the colonizing Irish. The present dwelling on the site dates from a much later period when a rapid growth in population led to the spread of settlement into the upland wastes. The Burial Register of Maentwrog records the death of a Tudor Roberts, aged 62, of Muriau'r Gwyddel in March 1819.
