Frankenbury camp ramparts
Frankenbury camp ramparts
The southern rampart of the ancient camp known as Frankenbury or Godmans Cap Camp. This is the highest and largest of its kind in the New Forest. It is pre-roman and may be as old as Neolithic, but its history is unknown as it has never been excavated. The southern ramparts form the boundary of the Sandy Balls estate. As seen here they are bare, recently having been cleared of holly thicket.
