John Kyrle 1637-1724, (man of Ross), was a philanthropist and landscape gardener, born in nearby Dymock. He built a Jacobean house in Ross market place. In 1700 he built this gateway, linking The Prospect with the churchyard. Due to recent subsidence, the footpath through is currently closed.
