The site of the battle of Newburn Ford.
In 1640 the Scottish Army defeated the English army at this point and occupied the City of Newcastle upon Tyne for 1 year. King Charles was forced to go to Parliament to ask for £200,000 to pay the ransom for the city.
After the ransom was paid the Scots left.
Musket balls are still being found in the area and a small exhibition can be seen in the ranger's station when it is open. Station only opens when a ranger is on site.
