Southgate Cemetery, Hornsea
Southgate Cemetery, Hornsea
The Southgate Cemetery was opened in 1885 on a two acre site purchased the previous year. By 1953 the cemetery was becoming overcrowded and the urban district council bought the land for a new burial ground at Edenfield off Marlborough Avenue, between Hornsea Pottery and the railway line. The picture shows the northernmost of two twin gatehouses at the Southgate site. On the roadside is the base of a medieval stone cross with the more decorative shaft of another one which was added later.
