On a stormy day with no-one else around it's not easy to visualise the fort in its heyday some 1,800 years ago. Back then, there would have been an auxiliary cohort of around 500 men with horses plus an accompanying civilian settlement with women, children and all the amenities the troops would have required. One unit stationed here were originally from Dalmatia (modern-day Croatia). I wonder what they thought of the Lakeland weather? Was it the posting from hell or just another outpost of empire?
