The Digby family, owners of Sherborne Castle, created this viewpoint at the end of the 18th Century. In the photo the view is from the gardens of the new castle to the ruins of the old castle. From the old castle it gives a view of the deer park and Jerusalem Hill. A notice nearby has the spelling "claire-voire", this type of aperture in a wall or hedge admitting light or framing a view is usually spelt "claire-voie".
