Shirley Quarry landfill site
Shirley Quarry landfill site
This landfill site was quarried for sand and gravel in the 1970s.
Its ponds were popular with local children for swimming.
Great-crested newts were very common here.
It was filled between 1981 and 1988 with household waste.
The candle flare stack in the picture burns off the gas from the site.
