Temple Church, Inner Temple, London
Temple Church, Inner Temple, London
This ancient and beautiful church was built in 1185 by the Knights Templar, an order of crusading monks founded to protect pilgrims on their way to and from Jerusalem in the 12th century. It is unusual in that it has a round Nave which is the original temple. It was meant to be a likeness to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. A long rectangular Chancel was added about a hundred years later. Inner Temple (and Middle Temple) are ancient secluded areas sandwiched between Fleet Street and the River Thames, where barristers and their staff can carry out their profession an atmosphere of calm and peace.
