Brake van at Riccarton Junction
Brake van at Riccarton Junction
This BR Shark ballast brake van sits on a short section of track at the former Riccarton Junction Station. Riccarton Junction was a railway village and station on the former North British Railway Edinburgh to Carlisle Line known as the Waverley Route. The Border Counties Railway, originating in Hexham, Northumberland, joined the Waverley Route to the south of the station in this remote and isolated area in the county of Roxburghshire. The Border Counties Line was closed to passenger traffic in 1956 and to freight in 1958, and by the time the Waverley Route was closed in 1969, most of the buildings on the site had been demolished. A voluntary organisation, Friends of Riccarton Junction, was formed in 1997 with the aim of restoring as much of the station as possible.
