The second schoolroom of the former National School, Birkenshaw
The second schoolroom of the former National School, Birkenshaw
This is dated 1850, but not completed until 1852. The inscription 'National School' is partly obscured by a later porch. This and the original schoolroom of 1842 became the Church of England school. When the Board school system was set up in 1870 Birkenshaw was in Gomersal township in the Cleckheaton District. The Cleckheaton electorate decided on 3 Jun 1871 that they did not need a school board, so the Church of England schools had no rivals. In the mid-20C a new school was opened in Southcroft, and the old classroom of the National School became parish rooms, whereas this 'new' classroom has become offices.
